Bishop Emeritus Mar George Punnakottil, the Founder Patron of Viswajyothi College of Engineering and technology, was born on Sept 13, 1936 at Thazhavankunnu. After matriculation in 1953 from Infant Jesus High School Vazhakulam he joined the Minor Seminary at Kothamangalam. He was ordained a presbyter in Rome on Oct 18, 1961. He did a licentiate in the study of the Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and received a doctorate in Biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University Rome. He was a visiting scholar in Union Theological Seminary in 1978. In 1976 he served as professor at St.Thomas' Apostolic Seminary Vadavathoor and as Vice Rector and Editor of the periodical Bible Bhashiyam. He was appointed Bishop of Kothamangalam on Feb 16, 1977 and continued till February 9, 2013

Born at Enanalloor, Vazhakulam, on 10th February 1937, Thomas, S/o Joseph and Elizebeth Malekudy had his schooling at Ayavana and Vazhakulam. He completed priestly studies in the pontifical Seminary Aluva and got ordained on 11th March, 1996. He stood in the forefront of all developmental efforts in the region. Establishment and construction of schools and churches in the parishes under his care were successfully taken up by him as and when the need arose. The pastor par excellence in Rev.Fr.Thomas Malekudy could not be confined to the limited area of the High ranges. In 1990 he was appointed parish priest of the Cathedral church, Kothamangalam and from 1994 to 2012, he served as the Vicar General of the Diocese. Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology, Vazhakulam, was his brain- child. It was at his initiative along with H.E. Dr. George Punnakkottil, the former Bishop of Kothamangalam, that the Diocesan Technical Education Trust was formed and the Trust Deed registered in 1999 with a view to establish an Engineering college in the self-financing sector. When Viswajyothi College was incepted on 17th October 2001 at Vazhakulam, it was his dream that came true. He was the first President of DTET, founder Manager of the College and served as Manager till 2012, when he retired. Presently, he serves as a member of Board of Governors of DTET and Advisory Board of VJCET.

Fr. Thomas Malekudy Endowment Lecture

The management and staff of VJCET has instituted an Endowment Lecture Series from 2016 onwards proposed to be conducted annually, in a topic related to Engineering & Technology, by a speaker of eminence in the respective domain ; as a token of gratitude to Rev. Fr. Thomas Malekudy, the first President of DTET and founder Manager of the College. This is intended to be an ideal platform for the staff and students for academic discussions on a topic of current relevance.
