Mechanical engineering is one of the major areas in the engineering and its principles are involved in the design, study, development and construction of physical devices and systems, along with controls. B.Tech Mechanical Engineering programme is accredited by NBA on June 2018 for three years and re-accredited from 2022 to 2025. Continued research and development have led to the development better machines and processes helping the mankind to ease the tasks & to achieve the never thought possible dreams.
The spectrum of professional activity for the mechanical engineering graduate runs from R&D to manufacturing, production, sales and marketing. Moreover, the comprehensive training and education attained by mechanical engineers are often called upon to assume managerial roles. Industry is in need of qualified mechanical engineering technologists that, upon graduation, are able to apply state-of-the-art tools in the areas of computer-aided design, finite element modeling and analysis, and the concepts of advanced mechanical design to the creation of sophisticated machines and systems.
Department of mechanical engineering is an outstanding example of the college's insistence on quality education appropriate to the needs of industry. The department faculty consists of well-qualified and experienced professionals having a proven track record in academics, industry and research. The faculty is well prepared to train competent Mechanical Engineering professionals in the field of engineering to meet requirements of industry and research organization academics etc.

B Tech Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 2002 with an annual intake of 60 students which was expanded to 120 students in the year 2003. In 2011 M tech in industrial engineering and management was started with an annual intake of 18 students. Currently, the department offers undergraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering with an annual intake of 60 students and postgraduate in Industrial Engineering & Management with an annual intake of 9 students. In a very short spell, the department could emerge with several university Ranks. The department has also signed MOUs with core companies which helps to develop industry department interactions. The programme was accredited by NBA in 2018 for a period of three years and re-accredited from 2022 to 2025.
Metrology and mechanical measurements lab
The metrology and mechanical measurements labs display various measuring equipment used in the field of mechanical engineering. It consists of various measuring equipment like autocollimator, load cell, pressure gauge apparatus, profile projector, gauge block, sine bar, strain gauge, stroboscope, temperature measurement apparatus and tool maker’s microscope. The lab is utilized by seventh semester mechanical engineering students.

Mechanical Engineering Lab
The mechanical engineering lab consists of air compressor test rig, centrifugal blower test rig, fluidized bed apparatus, whirling of shaft apparatus, gyroscope test rig, governor apparatus, static and dynamic balancing apparatus, governor apparatus and cam analysis apparatus. The lab is mainly utilized by mechanical engineering students.

Machine Tool Lab
The machine tool lab is one of the biggest labs in the department which is equipped with sufficient number of machines as prescribed in the syllabus and beyond. The lab is equipped with Lathes, Shaping machines, Slotting machines, Milling machines, Radial drilling machine, Surface grinding machine, Tool and cutter grinder and a CNC lathe. The lab is well lit and properly ventilated. The lab is provided with additional computer facility for improved learning experience. The lab is utilized for different lab courses in mechanical engineering B.Tech program and for various project works.

Metallurgy and Welding Lab
The Metallurgy and welding lab consists of Arc Welding machines, MIG Welding machine, Gas welding and Cutting equipment, Muffle furnace, Belt Grinder, Double disc polishing machine, Metallurgical microscope etc. The lab is utilized by the Manufacturing technology lab course and mechanical engineering workshop course and is also utilized for various project works.

Mechanical Engineering Workshop
The mechanical Engineering workshop is equipped with all the experimental set ups as prescribed in the syllabus. The workshop consists mainly of six sections: Fitting, Carpentry, Foundry, Sheet Metal, Welding and Smithy. The lab is well lit and properly ventilated. Department Association
The Mechanical Engineering Students Association “MAGNA” of Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology, aims at playing a pivotal role in the development of students as engineers through various out-of-curriculum and extracurricular activities. It aims to inculcate, among its members, an awareness and appreciation of the various disciplines of Engineering not only Mechanical Engineering. By means of its various activities, MAGNA aims at being a platform for all students of institution and particularly Mechanical Engineering student’s and seeks to be an active organization of the ME department which promotes their career interests.

MAGNA was inaugurated by Mr. Neelakandan A N, CGM (Planning & Project Management) Cochin Shipyard Ltd on 5 th December 2022 followed by a Technical Talk on “How to make job a Lahari”.
2021 – 2022
MAGNA was inaugurated by Dr. Padmakumar M, Manager (Product Engineering) Kennametal Shared Services Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore on 27 th January 2022 followed by a Technical Talk on “Industry 4.0”.
Mechanical Engineering Association organized an all Kerala Engineering college staff shuttle Badminton tournament in the loving memory of the Late Abilash T Chacko (Trade Instructor, Mechanical Engineering Department) on 24.05.2019.
MAGNA organized its first Annual Achievement Awards Function ATHENA’19 on Friday 17 th May, 2019. The awards recognized exceptional performance in academics as well as sports, performing arts and active participation in social events. The purpose was to encourage “other-than-academic talents” of our students and motivate them to shine in their respective fields.
National technological day was celebrated by Department of Mechanical Engineering on 14/5/2019. It is observed every year on 11th of May, as a reminder of the anniversary of Shakti cities of Pokhran nuclear test which was held on 11 th May 1998. The day highlights the importance of science in our daily lives.
