Realising the need and importance of mentoring a systematic arrangement is in place for mentoring at Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology. Faculty members are the first level mentors of the students and each faculty is assigned to a maximum of 15 students. Each student has mentor to provide personal care and develop his/her career. Every student is cared for and looked after well in the campus. The mentor is like a second parent to a student. No student in the campus is anonymous. The fourth hour every Friday is specifically assigned for mentoring. The concerned faculty member interacts with students in person and monitors issues faced by the students in the campus and outside the campus. During the mentoring session special care and attention is given to the mentees by mentors. Mentors keep a good rapport with mentees and help students in their academic and social activities. Faculty members maintain a separate record of the discussions for each of the student. If there are any special cases, it is referred to the Counsellors of the Counselling Division of Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology.
The Counselling Division at VJCET
A Counselling Division with qualified and experienced counsellors is functioning at Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology. Every year as part of induction programme, Orientation Classes on Ethics and Human Values are organised to the first-year students in the first semester itself. During this induction programmes information about the functioning of Counselling Division at VJCET is conveyed to the students.
Students are encouraged to approach the councillors for individual counselling as per their need. Mostly free times are set apart for counselling so that their academic activities are not very much affected. Students go for counselling either voluntarily or when they are directed by Principal, HOD or the group tutor. Also, in a dare need students are permitted to seek counselling as it is very important for their psychological well-being and integral psycho-social development. During counselling, the counsellors listen to them, make a rapport and data are collected in the preliminary session itself. Many students follow the directives and used to be regular and punctual in follow-up sessions. Orientation classes are a support for the students to come for counselling and get timely assistance to solve their issues and perform better academically.
The counsellors collect two different types of data; one is more personal in nature which is confidential and kept in the hands of Counsellor and other one is a consent form of the students which is more official and preserved in the files. Apart from individual counselling sessions the counsellors provide classes on Mental health, Motivation, Resilience, Positive Psychology and Human Formation to various batches occasionally.
Generally, students come with various issues such as lack of motivation, internet addiction, peer pressure, broken family issues, anxiety disorders, academic challenges, problems regarding nuclear families, frustration of the parents, financial issues and issues related education loans etc. These are some of the challenge’s students face and they seek counselling at proper time. The counsellors do some type of cognitive behavioural therapies and self-assessment tests so that the students can trace their problems and solve it with proper timely guidance.
