Waste minimization is very important because it is critical to protect the environment and boost environmental performance. Waste minimization techniques focus on preventing waste from ever being created, otherwise known as source reduction, and recycling. Viswajyothi college of Engineering and Technology therefore committed to:
Viswajyothi campus has a systematic waste management system to manage its waste properly. The waste management system in the campus is leading to reduction in the quantity of waste generated and it is also disposed safely after recovery of useful material and energy from it. This will help to maintain the campus clean and hygienic.
Waste Segregation Bins
Source segregation of waste is strictly followed for organic and inorganic wastes at the point of generation itself. There are sorting stations for itemized segregation of recyclable waste and proper handling of non-recyclable waste guaranteeing zero liability and protection to the environment.
Sellable, recyclable, non-recyclable and electronic waste are separated at the source itself within the campus and sent to respective recycling units. As a part of it all the scrap materials from different engineering laboratories have been collected and segregated so as to attain the maximum reuse of the material. For electronic waste, campus is having a well-managed team to collect, segregate and dispose via authorized agents. Biomedical waste and other solid waste are disposed off by an incinerator with a capacity of 30 kg. Hazardous wastes such as incinerator ash and dangerous chemicals are packed suitably, transported and handed over to authorized recyclers.
Incinerator
Solid waste management also involves organic waste processing, using the Biogas Plant. Major portion of organic waste collected from Ladies hostel, Gents hostel and college canteen are fed to the biogas plant having a capacity of 15 m3. An average of 300kg of organic solid waste is disposed-off on a daily basis. The bio-gas so generated is used in the hostel Kitchen. The slurry produced in the plant is diluted and is used in the vegetable garden. A portion of the kitchen waste generated from hostel mess and college canteen is disposed off by vermin composting. The organic manure so obtained is used for organic farming.
Bio gas plant
For treating the liquid wastes generated in the campus, a Sewage Treatment Plant(STP) with High Pressure Sand Filter and Activated Carbon Filter has been installed. The waste water collection tanks of the plant have a capacity 2 Lakh liters. The wastewater entering the STP is tested for various parameters like Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, pH, Colour etc. periodically. The Water testing laboratory is functioning under the Civil Engineering Department. The entire treated water is used for watering the gardens and lawns maintained in the campus and for agricultural purposes. The sludge settled in the STP is removed, dried and is used as manure for the gardens. Therefore, the entire waste water generated in the campus is treated and reused and thus an efficient Zero Liquid Discharging system is maintained.
